As an SLP that works with autistic children from ages 2 to 18, I found Dr. Kasari’s book and approach to be a paradigm shift from methodologies that require children to perform in order to be rewarded. And it works! If you have a child or a student that does not engage with you, I recommend using the techniques outlined in this book. Dr. Kasari’s approach is complex and focuses on joint-engagement through structured play with level appropriate toys. She also addresses therapeutic strategies for behavior regulation and communication. I also found her assessment, named SPACE (Short Play and Communication Evaluation), to be very helpful and quick! 15-20 minutes to administer. This book is rich with information and lots of helpful examples and case studies. It is clearly written with the practitioner in mind (e.g. OTs, SLPs, Teachers, Psychologists, and Social Workers). I have also shared the book—key parts focused on strategies—with the parents I work with. This book and the JASPER model have become my top resource and strategy for answering questions of what to do next with autistic children. I highly recommend this book for professionals who work with autistic children and families.

The Jasper Model for Children With Autism is a great overview of a very unique autism intervention. It brings the reader a combination of therapies that will enable you to bring a very powerful and unique intervention to your child or student. It also gives you a way of documenting the child’s advancement through the program; a must for showing a child’s progress.

This manual for clinicians is one of the best manuals I have purchased. It is so well written and explained. Safe to say almost all my questions about this intervention were answered once I read this manual. I LOVE the graphics and figures they included which helped me understand things better. My favorite thing about this manual is the “Dear JASPER advice columns” they included. They answered anticipated, frequently asked questions in the most professional yet friendly way possible. I am so glad I purchased this manual and would recommend if you are a clinician interested in learning more about this intervention!!

I found this manual to be very helpful to supplement my therapy sessions. The play scales especially are very detailed and clear, very helpful in figuring out where the child is and what the next step should be, particularly for those with no functional play yet. Also comes with a link to printable pdf files of all the forms.
